20x200Artists Ann Tarantino

I grew up as a serious competitive swimmer, training and competing from a very young age through early adulthood. This experience continues to inform my work, which refers to the discipline, repetition, and physical stamina required to perform athletically. My images are created using my own breath, which I use as a tool for mark-making. My interest in harnessing the breath springs from my experiences moving through the water and in an ongoing investigation of the simultaneous power and vulnerability of the physical self.

I earned a Bachelor’s degree from Brown University and an MFA in Painting from The Pennsylvania State University. Since then, I have lived in a variety of settings—urban and rural, around the U.S. and overseas—and find that each place leaves a distinct imprint on my work. I am currently living and working in State College, Pennsylvania.
