Needless to say, it was a time of immense change and anticipation. During my pregnancy I decided not to make any art, instead I stored all the ideas in my memory bank for future use. After our son was born, it all came flooding out. Within a year I had made a mountain of work, bought and remodeled an apartment building and helped raise a new baby with the help of an equally busy husband. Why take on so much, crazy? Part of it was having all these ideas stored up inside of me and wanting to see them realized. Another part was proving that a woman artist who has had a baby can have a family and still do the work. In the contemporary art world, we aren't supposed to talk about our feelings or our personal life, unless there is some sort of irony or sarcasm involved as a way to deflate any real feelings of happiness or frustration. The process of reflecting on my past is mirrored in the ways I approach my paintings. The blank surface on which I begin a painting is the field where I tie my memories together. The exploration I undertake in making a piece is parallel to the adolescent complexities I faced growing up. I use the figure as a way to exploit my past in this visual playing field. I use the body language of composition to emphasize the relationships between other memories. The clothing of the figures gives me the chance to create a nostalgic reference point where I can incorporate icons of the past that people of any age could relate to. Klein was seen as the favorite of the Broadway world: during the late 1940s and early 1950s, many of the most popular Broadway productions featured his work on their window cards and posters. By the mid-1950s, Klein established himself as one of America’s leading commercial illustrators. The next decade, however, would prove to be his most illustrious: between 1955 and 1965, Klein designed numerous award-winning travel advertisements, most of it for Howard Hughes and Trans World Airlines. One of these advertisements, depicting New York City’s Times Square, is now part of the collection at the Museum of Modern Art. Klein continued working commercially almost until the end of his life, but in his seventies returned to his artistic roots. He focused on watercolor depictions of his travels in the United States and Europe, painting both rural landscapes as well as architectural studies. These paintings also earned him many awards. Though scientists had published studies of fungi for many years, this two-volume set was notable for being fully written and illustrated by a woman.

Anna Marie Hussey, née Reed, developed a keen interest in art and botany as a child. That interest was supported in her marriage to Reverend Thomas John Hussey, a well-connected astronomer who came from a scientifically-minded family. It was unusual for Victorian women to engage in scientific study. Those who did were typically upper class and tended to paint flora, which was thought to be elegant and becoming. Hussey pushed back against those gendered notions, focusing on fungi and lichen despite what was considered socially appropriate. Whereas her fellow female illustrators were sent specimens to paint, Hussey ventured out on her own to find her subjects, traveling to terrain she described as “out-of-the-way wild places, far from carriage tracks, and often where large herds of cattle are pastured.” In a letter to her friend and leading mycologist of her time, Reverend M.J. Berkeley, Hussey astutely summed up her struggle with gender and propriety: “I am always under the uncomfortable impression that the thing that I am doing is not the right thing to be doing.” Berkeley later named a fungal genus Husseia after “my friend, Mrs. Hussey, whose talents well deserve such a distinction”.

Hussey blazed her own trail in publishing Illustrations of British Mycology, containing 90 detailed, hand-colored lithographic plates made by herself or her sister, with descriptions, personal observations, and anecdotes. Sadly, Hussey died in 1853. A second, smaller volume of 50 plates was published posthumously in 1855. The two volumes, especially the illustrations, were highly praised for both accuracy and elegance.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0265/3475/files/InstallShots_SQ_18_09870f76-982f-44aa-b123-d4aa8765ed0b.png?v=1744740442
northeast-la
Northeast LA
I make paintings using an arrangement of shapes to construct images of moments I experience during daily activities.
