Wildlife conservation photography has given me incredibly special and life-changing moments. In 2018 after seeing endangered Greater Adjutant storks scavenging in a sprawling landfill located in Northeast India, I suddenly realized I wanted my photographic work to convey something deeper, evoke emotion, and inspire change.

“Beneath the Bird Feeder” is a backyard photographic project starring many feathered (and some furred) visitors. Ultimately revealing insights into species behavior while showing the viewer a new perspective on a common pastime, subjects were photographed daily via a DSLR camera trap positioned underneath my bird feeder during the winter months of 2020-2021 in the Catskill Mountains of New York, USA.

I hope “Beneath The Bird Feeder” inspires viewers to explore their backyards and to give a closer look at overlooked “common” species, which are no less fabulous than their exotic counterparts. Imagine if we all paid attention, protected, and respected our immediate surroundings? I believe we’d make significant conservation gains. It’s all there waiting for us, we just have to open our eyes!

This oft-overlooked ground feeder is a favorite of Carla’s, and this particular almost-monochrome image is serving up some ukiyo-e vibes with a decidedly modern twist.
