Artist - Clara Peeters

Clara Peeters

While few details are known about Flemish painter Clara Peeters’ life, her work had immense influence on the trajectory of still life painting as an independent genre. Born in Antwerp in the late 16th century, Peeters was one of the few women artists to work professionally in the early 1600s, largely due to sweeping restrictions on women’s access and membership to artistic training and guilds. Despite this, her distinct style of close-up compositions and low vantage points were so influential, it is believed she may have headed a small school of her own. While official documentation of her training and career may be limited, Peeters’ inserted herself into the history books with subtle self references within her work in the form of self-portraits reflected in mirrored surfaces or a treat or two shaped carefully into her initials.
