My first apartment in Chicago was in a rundown building, but it had this narrow triangular balcony with a heavy, red metal banister and a spectacular view of Lake Michigan. At the time, I was pregnant with our first baby. I spent almost a whole month cleaning the apartment-nesting, so to speak. We had always had trouble with pigeons landing on our balcony and making a mess with their feathers and poop. But that spring, a pigeon made a nest on our balcony and laid her eggs. It seemed symbolic, so we let her stay. In the original painting, the rug is painted in oil paint, while the rest of the painting is in gouache. The rug is bright and clean, but the balcony is still dusty from the birds, spiders' webs and pollution.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0265/3475/files/wDH-8MGA9UYrYmg7yvIPkGskxvO1y_F9qDMjaDoef8.jpg?v=1683228390
brendan-wenzel-aves
Aves

The 14 Asian birds featured in Aves represent just a small sampling of the hundreds of species found within the region. It was on the afternoon of one of those sultry days which, in that portion of the country, exhibit towards evening the most glorious effulgence that can be conceived. The sun, now far advanced toward the horizon, still shone with full splendour, the ocean around glittered in its quiet beauty, and the light fleecy clouds that here and there spotted the heavens, seemed flakes of snow margined with gold. Our bark was propelled almost as if by magic, for scarcely was a ripple raised by her bows as we moved in silence. Far away to seaward we spied a flock of Flamingoes advancing in "Indian line," with well-spread wings, outstretched necks, and long legs directed backwards. My trailer paintings began as an offshoot of that series and I approach these tiny homes on wheels in very much the same way - isolating them from much of their original surroundings, so I can unearth clues in looming shadows, empty chairs out front, doors left slightly ajar or glimpses through parted window curtains - all in an attempt to piece together (imagined) underlying stories of the trailers themselves and those who might live inside or store them out back. These trailers are full of compelling contradictions: simplicity versus complexity, security versus freedom, glamour versus mundanity. Over the years I have continued to delve deeper and deeper into the minutiae found in the distorted reflections on the shiniest of trailers, inevitably discovering a complex and nuanced world I completely missed at first glance.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0265/3475/files/DpdlI3RPxytzFXxH63uar1Jvjqjtb98L1j0_7gjYFGg.png?v=1683230093
grand-slam
Grand Slam

This piece was inspired by the colorful, minimalist designs of classic tennis rackets. In this ridiculous year that alternates between supremely inspiring (smash that highest glass, HRC!) and supremely depressing (ugh, I can't even type his name), I have been thinking a *LOT* about equality, privilege, and love, for women and men of all races and orientations. There's one thing that has shown me how pervasive sexist shit still is AND helped me feel better about all the things being done to overcome it: the She-Woman Misogyny Haters Club, started by Ms. Jen Bekman on Facebook. Despite the name, there are both male and female members, and many of them gave their excellent input on what books made them the feminists they are today (like We Should All Be Feminists by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie), or taught them that it's totally awesome to be a girl (A Wrinkle in Time!) or woman. He walked around, capturing the various booths, rides, games, and with them, the golden feel of summer. The images he made that day are part of his Roadside America project, an archive of over 30 years of photographs. The stunning color in the photographs is partly due to Margolies’ use of slide film. Slide film lends a finer grain, richer colors, and more contrast than standard negative film.

This specific New Jersey boardwalk dates back to 1932, where it began with one carousel. Just five years later, it had expanded to include arcade games, concessions, a ballroom and a roller rink. Disco Star: Heartbreaker eventually joined the many rides on the pier, which had transformed from the home of a single ride to an amusement park destination. Called a Music Express ride, the Disco Star: Heartbreaker had a circular, undulating track, and remained a popular attraction until Hurricane Sandy struck in 2012. The storm destroyed the pier and many of its rides, including Disco Star. This is a bittersweet common denominator of a number of Margolies’ photographs—they were often the last image of a structure before it was torn drown or destroyed.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0265/3475/files/3l7bYF3wvxFppRuptwUuSIfvqsXFvghXgK_czlEdNvU.png?v=1683229125
i-support-public-libraries
I Support Public Libraries

Public Libraries are the last of the Commons.
