My paintings revolve around specific domestic routines and activities: cleaning, cooking, eating, sleeping, playing. My paintings reconstruct the spaces in which these activities occurred, as remembered visually, wall-by-wall, item-by-item: the door next to the stove, the two windows overlooking the garden, the turquoise linoleum floor, etc. Compositionally I strive for rigor in purely formal terms of shape, space, and color. But visually, the pictures are meant to feel like home: the kitchen, the family room, the neighborhood street, the church we went to, our grandparents’ house.

Power Outage is about the 2010 black out in Chicago during a summer heat wave. My entire family was visiting from Cincinnati to meet my five week old daughter Betty. The house was sweltering. I was awake in the middle of the night feeding the baby and my mom brought in a candle. We sat up talking because it was too hot to sleep.
