Artist Statement

This series of photographs and videos titled Perceptual Beauty (2011-ongoing), explores the motivations and intentions associated with the use of beauty products. Through scientific observation and formal interpretations in my studio, I playfully use these consumer products as both subject and art material (deliberately going against their intended purpose to conceal or accentuate the female body). In addition to the abstract images and optical patterns of make-up, my work shifts the current cultural vernacular by visualizing close-up views of sticky/exploded/distressed make-up and by representing diversity in gender, race, and pop-culture contexts. I have been inspired by Op Art abstract painting, contemporary advertising, scientific imaging and Third Wave Feminism to produce macro close-up photographs of the adorned, treated body and beauty "tools".
