Six weeks later the club closed its doors forever, and the fabled walls and stage were dismantled. The club had been a favorite venue for countless rock and punk acts, but for those few days my experience of the club was the exact opposite of most people's. I came to look forward to my visits as a time of peaceful solitude. I arrived each morning at 11:00 with my tripod and camera, greeted Hilly at his desk, and then passed into a silent and empty club. During the following three to five hours of shooting, I rarely saw another human. The club was so dark, even during the day, that I had to carry a flashlight. After framing each shot, I took five to seven bracketed exposures, with each exposure lasting as long as 30 seconds, and I ended up with more than 1800 individual frames. As they are being photographed, they are in a process of alteration from solid to liquid, from organized form in space to aqueous blob on a surface, and thus suggest a transitiveness that photography, as a medium devoted to stilling the moment, would seem to contradict. Similarly, as was true of the pictures of leaf veins and tree branches, light seems not so much to shine on the snowflakes as it shines through them. Instead of appearing as specimens, in the manner of 19th-century scientific observation, the snowflakes are objects of transformation. Few of the Starns' snowflakes are models of perfection, and in this they remind one of finding starfish and seashells scoured by the tides and left to dry on sandy beaches. Many have parts missing, or they have all their detailed armatures on one side but not the other. Here again, the Starns' images exceed the aesthetic register of the catalog. Unlike industrial structures, or manmade devices, imperfection is an essential part of their beauty and poignancy. Here is material evidence of the Starns' interest in the phenomenological character of the natural world, cast into being against the certitude of our own impermanence. The photographs speak of the fragile delicacy of our ever-warming world while being themselves a visual bulwark against despair, and they draw us, like moths to light, to the pleasures of sight that but for the camera would exceed the human eye." Excerpt from Andy Grundberg's introduction in alleverythingthatisyou (catalogue published by the Wetterling Gallery, Stockholm, Sweden 2007)

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0265/3475/files/L6V5A8SjcRBODk1mbp8x5psgcjWQaFPjW3f1aHr8b68.jpg?v=1683230716
roger-ballen-culprit
Culprit

Ultimately, the work of Roger Ballen is a form of radical disquieting subjectivism, a psychology of the world itself that represents the inside of politics, the inside of ideology, the inside of ourselves. – Robert Cook, Associate Curator of Contemporary Art, Art Gallery of Western Australia

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0265/3475/files/rqR6exPEeieU0VbZ1YL828Pn3g07_oSTfp_VUuFPvI.jpg?v=1683229903
yosuke-yamaguchi-slow-ending
slow ending

Siri Hustvedt once said in her essay about Chardin's still life paintings, "I feel human presence is there in the paintings, even though the human beings are gone. I want to loosen more of my feelings and let them flow around until they find the right place to settle or connect to, and wait until a certain landscape gradually emerges, which goes beyond my limited thoughts and intentions. This is one of those landscapes. Maybe she (and the beast) is the last person to protect the sacred place down inside the heart, where we can really feel that we are related to nature's structure. I think, sooner or later, the time will come when people have to decide whether to land on this place and go deep inside this dark, unknown forest alone by themselves, or to just row their boat off shore and leave it behind. But even if you choose the latter and try to go as far away as you can, it will remain in your head and you will always know that it will be there, waiting for you to return ashore.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0265/3475/files/1hApGn2Wfp1rjb_4aDgjmkOD9s5cyjDtia4-6-Qa7nQ.jpg?v=1683230646
jsc2012e051507_alt
jsc2012e051507_alt

This is a composite of a series of images photographed from a mounted camera on the Earth-orbiting International Space Station, from approximately 240 miles above Earth. It's not hard to see why Long's Peak is the most climbed peak in the US over 14,000 feet, it's incredibly picturesque. Considered one of the last defining figures of nineteenth-century American landscape imagery, Adams dedicated himself to both his art and his subjects. The sweeping landscapes established him as an expert in photography at the time, consulting for multiple camera manufacturers and developing the zone systemó?, a technique enabling photographers to visualize an image and produce a matching photograph by controlling exposure and the developing process. His expertise was not just in his art, but also in his knowledge of the canyons, cliffs, forests, and plains that were his subjects.
