Artist Statement

The photos that spawned my night landscape series were taken around the time I graduated from college. During an unusually foggy night, I grabbed my vintage Rollei Twin Lens Reflex and shot 4 rolls. I was blown away by how wild the images were and was very excited to produce more. I realized, however, that in upstate New York, fog only rolls in every so often and when it does, it is usually late at night or very early in the morning. Fortunately, moving to LA turned out to be great. The marine layer at the beach brings in a substantial amount of fog which makes for perfect shooting conditions. I went out as often as I could, searching for the perfect sparely lit, desolate scenes. I was interested in the combination of artificial light mixing with the atmosphere to illuminate certain parts of the landscape to give the photos a fake, dreamlike, lonely feel. Technically speaking, these images were shot with with a medium (6x7) or large format (4x5) camera using high speed film. There is also very little digital manipulation or retouching as I'm a traditionalist by heart.

Amanda Friedman is originally from suburban Detroit. She currently lives in Los Angeles and shoots for a variety of different clients including The Hollywood Reporter, Billboard, People, The London Sunday Telegraph and The Wall Street Journal.
