Needless to say, it was a time of immense change and anticipation. During my pregnancy I decided not to make any art, instead I stored all the ideas in my memory bank for future use. After our son was born, it all came flooding out. Within a year I had made a mountain of work, bought and remodeled an apartment building and helped raise a new baby with the help of an equally busy husband. Why take on so much, crazy? Part of it was having all these ideas stored up inside of me and wanting to see them realized. Another part was proving that a woman artist who has had a baby can have a family and still do the work. In the contemporary art world, we aren't supposed to talk about our feelings or our personal life, unless there is some sort of irony or sarcasm involved as a way to deflate any real feelings of happiness or frustration. I sometimes think they just disappear. When I got to the person's office I saw that he had one of my drawings on his desk leaning up against the wall. I liked the idea that the drawing still existed and it made me feel good (and excited!) that he enjoyed it and was hopefully continuing to get enjoyment from it after all of the years since I had made it. The other day, I was in the gift shop across the street from the Museum of Modern Art waiting for a friend who was in line to buy something. Near the registers, I found a batch of those rainbow colored pencils that most of us used to draw with when we were little. They are fun to make pictures with. I pulled one out and pulled out my sketchpad to test it. I made a circle in my pad. There was something about the colors that excited me and I immediately wanted to make hundreds of these circle drawings and get them to everyone I could. I am making these color circles in the hopes that you will find some enjoyment out of them. You can buy one for yourself and or you can buy one for a friend or you can buy one for a stranger. The park opened in 2000 and I painted this in 2002 after touring the offices of The New Yorker magazine. I was visiting from my native San Francisco when the esteemed baseball writer and New Yorker editor Roger Angell called me into his office. He was enamored with this new ballpark and asked me to paint something and then he would write a story about it. Talk about dreams coming true! Armed with a press pass and video camera, I toured the park and decided that a painting set from right field would provide an excellent view of the park's eccentricities, like the giant coke bottle slide and worn leather glove, as well as a slight view of the Bay Bridge. But once I started sketching I realized that the dimensions of the magazine meant my composition would be too horizontal for the two-page spread I had to fill. That's when I decided to include the surrounding environs, the bridge, Treasure Island, the foothills of Oakland and Berkeley across the bay and McCovey Cove, in order to make a scene that would fit the magazine's dimensions. Naturally, a Barry Bonds "splash hit" would capture the essence of that year's Giants team. I like to add small details in big paintings like this to amuse those who pay too much attention to such things. On the scoreboard, the hated LA Dodgers are losing 10-0 in the first inning, while in mile-high Colorado the score is 22-18 after only one inning. You can see some Mets fans arguing in the stands about the action and there's one fan with his arms held high in happiness. That would be me. When I painted this the park was named after a regional phone company, Pacific Bell, and was known locally as Pac Bell Park. A few years later the park's name was changed to SBC Park after one phone company bought up another one. After yet another merger in the corporate phone world, the American Telephone and Telegraph company took over SBC, and now our local ballpark is called AT&T Park. One of these children’s books was Wilson Morris’s A Day With Bum; and the smart little fish, illustrated by Clyde A. Copson. It's Copson's signature that you'll spy in the lower right corner of this edition.

The publication of the book was co-sponsored by the FWP and the New York City New Reading Materials Program, the latter having been created to improve the reading skills of the city’s youth. While other initiatives that worked with the FWP brought in commercial partners, the New York City Reading Materials Program self-published its 200-some titles in large editions, unfortunately relying on inexpensive and unstable paper and ink. The few copies that survive today exist mostly in public and academic libraries, and are often badly damaged due to the brittle and acidic paper used in their production. A Day with Bum; and the smart little fish now lives in the Rare Books Room at the main branch of the New York Public Library.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0265/3475/files/zYNpueN37giMLGKnKrKPjuWkoK2Do23lrFvWplMwJGs.png?v=1683230993
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0265/3475/collections/VintageEditions_ThreeCats_0002_1000px_900x_717f720b-7e6e-46a2-85a4-332af5c372fa.png?v=1690208808
