This is the place, as a child, I'd idealized as paradise. Despite their difference, I have tried to make pictures for both Praia Piquinia and Paradis with new vision, or "regard", word that in French refers to observing. In English, appropriately, it also means attention, consideration, a feeling of affection, and respect. While rediscovering the islands, I found myself shifting my camera between earth, sky, water, trees...trying with every shot to get away from the so-called conventions of framing. An approach that aligns itself aesthetically with some of the Modernists in photography, I was intent on seeing the Seychelles without the weight of parameters. (Just large cameras!) Without our normal criteria for recognition, that which we look at can be renewed; new as in the first days of existence, breathing presence, light, and the incarnation of the world. In short, an image of paradise. So here, before these images, I hope for the viewer to feel exposed, like Adam or Eve before God invited them to name the elements of nature around them. Some subjects are challenging to identify at first, while others play off the glare in our eyes; but even slight disorientation has the potential to disarm, and stretch us. We may suddenly find ourselves more receptive, like a child who discovers the world without predispositions, without judgements that risk to reduce his or her imagination. Paradis represents a departure, literal and formal, from Praia Piquinia. In the text accompanying this plate, John Lindley wrote that the Register was “indebted to the Earl of Mountnorris”, who raised the tree peony from seed and supplied Lindley and the illustrator Sarah Ann Drake with specimens from which Drake “figur[ed] this beautiful variety of the Tree Pæony”. This was indeed an impressive feat, as tree peonies take much longer to grow than garden peonies. They’re well worth the wait, with larger, hardier flowers that last longer once cut. The “semi-double” categorization refers to the number of petal rows: a semi-double peony has more than one row of petals coming out of the crown of the flower, but the anthers are still visible when the flower is in bloom. That interest was supported in her marriage to Reverend Thomas John Hussey, a well-connected astronomer who came from a scientifically-minded family. It was unusual for Victorian women to engage in scientific study. Those who did were typically upper class and tended to paint flora, which was thought to be elegant and becoming. Hussey pushed back against those gendered notions, focusing on fungi and lichen despite what was considered socially appropriate. Whereas her fellow female illustrators were sent specimens to paint, Hussey ventured out on her own to find her subjects, traveling to terrain she described as “out-of-the-way wild places, far from carriage tracks, and often where large herds of cattle are pastured.” In a letter to her friend and leading mycologist of her time, Reverend M.J. Berkeley, Hussey astutely summed up her struggle with gender and propriety: “I am always under the uncomfortable impression that the thing that I am doing is not the right thing to be doing.” Berkeley later named a fungal genus Husseia after “my friend, Mrs. Hussey, whose talents well deserve such a distinction”.

Hussey blazed her own trail in publishing Illustrations of British Mycology, containing 90 detailed, hand-colored lithographic plates made by herself or her sister, with descriptions, personal observations, and anecdotes. Following in that tradition, I wanted to combine the essence of scientific examination with the themes that drive my work as a whole. My cyanotype studies are about the perception of an idealized nature more than an accurate portrayal of a particular specimen. The cyanotype “Catskill Prairie” was created from pressed plants gathered on a friend’s land in the Hudson Valley. Prairies do not occur naturally in upstate NY; it is a transplanted midwestern dream growing on four acres where it shouldn’t be. As someone who once tried to grow California native plants from my childhood in a cold New York sunroom, I can relate to this kind of nostalgic re-creation. The composition invokes how it feels to sit in the prairie and look out through the grasses, cone-flower, bee-balm, queen-anne’s lace, and goldenrod.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0265/3475/files/InstallShots_SQ_49_63c39f1f-8539-4cfb-89c4-97c917ae79e4.png?v=1745332405
emily-nathan-evening-sun
Evening Sun
I was in the town of Napa for a commercial shoot, and was having one of those magical afternoons where the world was seemingly handing me little photographic gifts as I wandered around an old section of downtown Napa on foot—I was in a flow state. Mapping, topographical painting, and botanical illustration co-exist simultaneously with pattern and free-flowing geometry inspired by Pre-Columbian and traditional textiles and ceramics. These traditional textiles are often created by women, and, as "women's work" created in the post-Columbian context, they both echo and resist European modes of representation. Elements of Neo-Concrete painting and modernist design are also present, undermining the fantasy of the sublime, authentic landscape by interrupting its traditional conventions and framing. He also made prints in sepia tone, an equally emphatic aesthetic gesture. 20x200’s Cornflowers in a field of rye and Siren use a digitally combined color image from the Library of Congress, which owns the archive, carefully corrected and printed." — Read more from Lyle Rexer on the blog >>
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0265/3475/files/tQHoACE2HK8YusU-k79giWogYRW8AkmkzDn3b9teuVY.png?v=1683228371
hannah-borger-overbeck-vase-with-yellow-flowers
Vase with Yellow Flowers
Painted in 1915 by Hannah Borger Overbeck, these bright, sunny blooms are sure to emit an unrelenting radiance through the darkening days of fall. Drawing inspiration from nature, many of Overbeck’s designs displayed plants and florals in their natural environment. I’m drawn to narratives addressing the environment and memory. The tension between the natural world and human intervention is explored through subject and material. I use plants, homemade dyes, biodegradable and recycled fabrics, locally sourced and naturally dyed wool and thread. I create a variety of textiles—naturally dyed, cyanotype, and plant stamped—as elements for my work.

These botanically-printed pieces have been created using specimens grown in my own gardens. For many years I lived in upstate NY before moving to LA. So I use a combination of plants native to the Hudson Valley and southern California. Through experimentation, I’ve come to know the best plants for printing. Once the specimen is collected, carefully and mindfully so as to preserve the living plant, it’s placed in a large home-made press in my studio. Once dried, it can then be coated with paint and printed on fabric to create a composition. California Chaparral and Ferns, Ferns, Ferns celebrate the beauty and importance of native plants in the landscape and nature’s endless healing power.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0265/3475/files/I_xgF10trMkRgkZfVrIKTldd0egnKlZK6qkVWqZFdAk.png?v=1683228627
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0265/3475/collections/AnnaAtkins_Ceylon_0002_1000px_900x_cdaa64fd-5b2c-4686-ac64-0d635b518ea9.png?v=1682950554
