How can we find our footing in a world that seems to be constantly shifting? Following a long interest in how things come apart, I've lately been focusing more on community ties and the security (or illusion of security) needed to nurture growth. Burgeoning cities of a sort are beginning to fill in the voids in my paintings. As in life, with a sort of trial and error, some efforts work better in making the whole precarious heap hum. Part of it was having all these ideas stored up inside of me and wanting to see them realized. Another part was proving that a woman artist who has had a baby can have a family and still do the work. In the contemporary art world, we aren't supposed to talk about our feelings or our personal life, unless there is some sort of irony or sarcasm involved as a way to deflate any real feelings of happiness or frustration. Why not come out with it? During this crazy year, these String Theory Drawings were the one constant in my life. I would come to the studio for a couple of hours each day and escape into my work. The evolution of these drawings and how they slowly came into focus over time, each little line stacked upon itself, each color responding to the next, brought me peace and solace in a time of roaring distraction. I send books and drawings and other things I make in the mail to people and I often wonder what happens to these things once I put them in the mailbox or hand them to the person at the post office. I sometimes think they just disappear. When I got to the person's office I saw that he had one of my drawings on his desk leaning up against the wall. I liked the idea that the drawing still existed and it made me feel good (and excited!) that he enjoyed it and was hopefully continuing to get enjoyment from it after all of the years since I had made it. The other day, I was in the gift shop across the street from the Museum of Modern Art waiting for a friend who was in line to buy something. Near the registers, I found a batch of those rainbow colored pencils that most of us used to draw with when we were little. They are fun to make pictures with. I pulled one out and pulled out my sketchpad to test it. I made a circle in my pad. There was something about the colors that excited me and I immediately wanted to make hundreds of these circle drawings and get them to everyone I could. I am making these color circles in the hopes that you will find some enjoyment out of them. You can buy one for yourself and or you can buy one for a friend or you can buy one for a stranger. I bought an old Natural History Museum pennant with an Apatosaurus on it from a vendor at a flea market one time. After I bought it he said, I hope it brings you many years of joy. No photo references, no tablets, no brushes to wash: just my finger on the tiny touch screen. Don't even need a proper light: the drawing itself glows in a dark corner. At $4.99, Brushes is a very democratic tool (provided you have an iPhone, sure) and I suspect it'll be to drawing what email was for letter writing. I only got an iPhone in February 2009, so all of this is still very new. It all started when I realized I could draw while night-riding in a car. Soon I found myself sketching NY spots that are part of my life. I've lived in the USA for 20 years and I'm still looking at its urban landscape as if I was discovering it for the first time.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0265/3475/files/32IaCnrwPh0PtRyzTCxg_wvn3UQwf4_3hn2Js1-7rHU.jpg?v=1683230099
jorge-colombo-lexington-and-53rd-street
Lexington and 53rd Street

The book New York: Finger Paintings by Jorge Colombo compiles the early days of my working on an iPhone touch screen, going back to 2009.
