Artist Statement

This map was meant to show those from abroad a practical guide to all the "new" monuments in Paris. Yes, it's indeed a tourist map! The funny thing about looking at a vintage map of an incredibly steeped-in-history (and fairly intact) city such as Paris is that, by and large, the main landmarks remain very much the same. Although this map is from 110+ years ago, we see all the sights, the Arc de Triomphe, the aforementioned Tour de Eiffel, Invalides, Pantheon, Hotel de Ville, Notre Dame and churches, churches, churches, in such a manner that by following main boulevards you'd still be able to find your way to them today with this map in hand. Getting to the sights at the turn of the century was made easy for the map holder: The solid red lines indicate new rail routes, and the dotted red lines show routes either being constructed or in the process of being planned.
