Billboards in the American landscape have always personified "epic" to me, even before I saw Stephen Shore's iconic South of Klamath Falls, Oregon. Blank billboards captured my attention even more than ones with advertisements because they were able to straddle the space between screaming at me, yet saying nothing at all. I was particularly drawn to the billboard in this image because of its orientation, surroundings and the fast moving clouds that night. It stands alone in the middle of a city, with its head seemingly held high. The net of wires between the viewer and the blank canvas creates a separating layer, with hints of ghostly flight paths of long-gone airplanes.
