Every now and then I can't help myself. I lower my guard and let New York City overwhelm my skeptical photographer's eye, my cautious intellectual side, and I end up with an unabashedly romantic take on the town that has been my home for 26 years. Alec Soth recently said that photography is invariably linked with nostalgia, and surely shooting these gorgeous New York City streets can too easily tip into a maudlin reverie on the city's past. We've spent so long fussing over the relentless details in cartography that we've sort of forgotten what things (should) look like at a distance. This August 2010 version of prettymaps is code-named "Isola" after the Finnish textile designer Maija Isola. At a time when the tools for making custom maps and bespoke cartographies are becoming easier and more accessible it is nice to look back at her work and imagine the maps she might have made if she were alive today. prettymaps is an experimental map from Stamen Design.

*Road, highway and path data collected by the OpenStreetMap (OSM) project.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0265/3475/files/InstallShots_SQ_8_4c84cb25-a12a-4f51-b0f3-392684c12f93.png?v=1745610042
amy-casey-extended-city
Extended City

In my paintings, I have been trying to find stability in a landscape with no land. How can we find our footing in a world that seems to be constantly shifting? Cities are fascinating creatures, the work and organization that goes into a city is creation and evolution; the constant adaptations and the sometimes hidden history of these changes are things I like to think about. Following a long interest in how things come apart, I've lately been focusing more on community ties and the security (or illusion of security) needed to nurture growth. Burgeoning cities of a sort are beginning to fill in the voids in my paintings. As in life, with a sort of trial and error, some efforts work better in making the whole precarious heap hum. I am consistently fascinated by the resilience of life and our ability to keep going in the face of sometimes horrendous or ridiculous circumstances. Some are quiet, contemplative scenes from reconstruction sites-both in New York and New Orleans-where work has come to a temporary standstill. Other works in the series depict (non)views through generic hotel room windows. The vacancy of these spaces is palpable, and the overall mood of the work is subdued. Many of the images feature thresholds; in addition to the windows, there are doorways, tunnels and holes. These are liminal zones, where one might pass from one space or state of being to another, but often a curtain, screen or reflective surface interferes, holding the viewer back at the point of transition. Transition is thus presented as a continuous state. A year after that, as former owner Hilly Kristal succumbed to cancer, a high-end clothing store negotiated to take over the space. The club had been a favorite venue for countless rock and punk acts, but for those few days my experience of the club was the exact opposite of most people's. I came to look forward to my visits as a time of peaceful solitude. I arrived each morning at 11:00 with my tripod and camera, greeted Hilly at his desk, and then passed into a silent and empty club. During the following three to five hours of shooting, I rarely saw another human. The club was so dark, even during the day, that I had to carry a flashlight. After framing each shot, I took five to seven bracketed exposures, with each exposure lasting as long as 30 seconds, and I ended up with more than 1800 individual frames. The bridge, built in 1909, was the last of three suspension bridges connecting Manhattan and Brooklyn, but was especially notable for its innovative design. We get that sense of awe from Berenice Abbott's line-driven photograph, taken in 1935 as part of her series documenting the gentrification and physical changes to New York City. For us, the Manhattan Bridge is an iconic structure in the city's infrastructure, but for Abbott, it was part of a changing New York.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0265/3475/files/VMlkh_h4aMuNrDbEaVhxExQHL1HFSRMWuzG6v1x8Jew.png?v=1683228597
washington-d-c-iss046-e-25742
Washington, D.C. Klein used art to influence the world of advertising. After serving in the Army during World War II, Klein moved to New York City and began working as a commercial illustrator. Klein was seen as the favorite of the Broadway world: during the late 1940s and early 1950s, many of the most popular Broadway productions featured his work on their window cards and posters. By the mid-1950s, Klein established himself as one of America’s leading commercial illustrators. The next decade, however, would prove to be his most illustrious: between 1955 and 1965, Klein designed numerous award-winning travel advertisements, most of it for Howard Hughes and Trans World Airlines. One of these advertisements, depicting New York City’s Times Square, is now part of the collection at the Museum of Modern Art. Klein continued working commercially almost until the end of his life, but in his seventies returned to his artistic roots. He focused on watercolor depictions of his travels in the United States and Europe, painting both rural landscapes as well as architectural studies. These paintings also earned him many awards.
