In this image, the silhouette of '20s mountaineer Thomas G. Hermans approaches a Paradise Glacier ice cave in Washington State's Rainier National Park. According to the University of Washington Libraries, the park "drew thousands of hikers and mountaineers from all around the world to the mountain's major attractions, including summit climbs and excursions to its famous glaciers and ice caves." A photographer from Tacoma photography studio Ranapar Studio (very likely an abbreviation for Rainier National Park), originally founded by Seattle photographer Asahel Curtis, collected images from the park in an album dated 1923-1931.
