This New York City skyline was captured in 1911 by Irving Underhill, one of the preeminent commercial photographers of early twentieth century New York. Though Underhill's studio was in Manhattan, he resided just across the Hudson River in Jersey City. It's likely that his home base served up this view of downtown Manhattan.

The skyline pictured here covers a swath of Manhattan from just north of City Hall to the island's southern tip, featuring iconic structures like the Woolworth Building, Trinity Church, and the White Hall offices. While those three are among the buildings still standing, many others pictured here have since been either radically revamped or demolished completely. Going from neo-gothic to high-tech modern, subsequent styles blended into the downtown Manhattan view we have today. The skyline has changed dramatically over the past 100+ years, as dynamic as the ever-evolving spirit of the city itself.
