I start a painting with a story, a narrative of sorts that is formed as I paint, but as I continue, the original story gets flipped and skewed on the paper and the icons and characters of my story become remnants of the original story. I like to use the house as a symbol in my paintings because their simplicity obscures the complex and uniquely personal relationship that each viewer has to an idea of ‘home’. The telephone poles are a universal and quickly fading icon of communication that symbolize emotional connection, formality, privacy, disconnection and alienation. In painting, I’m always curious and excited to see how my internalized storytelling when I paint, manifests itself on the paper.

Below is my internal story for the painting, “from this thought a hazy question”.

Go ahead, turn the knob, and that will start this world up.
You see it, right? Just east of the yellow sails. Then the people in the houses will rush to their controls, the wires will jiggle, the satellites will listen, the engines will roar and from this thought a hazy question will form.

Margaret Ann Withers

Margaret Ann Withers is an autodidact artist who lives New York city and works in painting, drawing, photography, sculpture and writing. Originally from Texas, Withers’ has exhibited her work throughout the country and internationally in Brussels, Australia, Berlin, China and Russia. Her artwork is included in multiple private and corporate collections, including Trunginger AG, in Zurich, Switzerland, and has won numerous awards, including a 2016 Artist in Residence at The Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA), 2013/2015 resident fellowships to the Vermont Studio Center, a 2013 fellowship to the Millay Colony, and a 2013 USA Project Grant. She has been in group exhibits at The Drawing Center Museum in New York City, MarinMOCA in California and Attleboro Arts Museum in Massachusetts. In 2014, the city of Brussels, in coordination with La Bellone, invited her to participate in a group exhibit during Brussel’s Winter Wonders. She is represented by Arcilesi & Homberg Fine Art in New York City.
