Historically, humans have used this sharing of experience to pass on knowledge, beliefs, values, secrets and information. Through stories we explain how things are, why they are, and our role and purpose, and these stories have become both the building blocks of knowledge and the foundation of memory and learning. Today, the visualization of our personal stories is an integral and essential part of the human experience. My body of work in visual storytelling combines the narrative text of a story with a variety of creative elements to augment and enhance the traditional storytelling process. It is also dependent on the observer—the witness to the story—as any participant interprets their worldview through the filter of their own perceptions. By design, it is a co-creative process resulting in an intimate mutually expressive experience. My work centers on the combination of language and image to create immersive linear stories. I use mixed media--typography, fabric, string, Lucite, etc, to create narrative experiences for myriad audiences. I believe that my interaction with the museum visitors can inform my process by providing immediate responses, feedback and engagement. My overall goals are to create authentic large-scale visual representations of the human experience through people, perception, language and image.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0265/3475/files/InstallShots_SQ_13_7ebc5482-d859-4f73-84ad-292911b468ca.png?v=1746040542
snow-crystals
Snow Crystals
Over the course of his life, Wilson A. Economic policy changes in the 1840s sought to suppress displays of luxury. As the culture changed, ukiyo-e adjusted its subject matter: focusing on scenes of nature like landscapes, birds, and flowers. Considered one of the last defining figures of nineteenth-century American landscape imagery, Adams dedicated himself to both his art and his subjects. The sweeping landscapes established him as an expert in photography at the time, consulting for multiple camera manufacturers and developing the zone systemó?, a technique enabling photographers to visualize an image and produce a matching photograph by controlling exposure and the developing process. His expertise was not just in his art, but also in his knowledge of the canyons, cliffs, forests, and plains that were his subjects. A vocal environmental and wilderness activist, Adams advocated for the conservation of state parks. His work is a continuing testament to his passion for the wilderness of America.

In 1941 the National Park Service commissioned Adams to create a photo mural for the Department of the Interior Building in Washington, DC. The theme was to be nature as exemplified and protected in the U.S. National Parks. The project was halted because of World War II and never resumed. Much of the project is now kept in the National Archives. This photograph is from the initial National Park Service project.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0265/3475/files/bL7stVimNXftw694LdYaIkG7eNCvsHOuvrAMu1cFYsY.png?v=1683229979
fly-twa-new-york
Fly TWA: New York
David Klein created the art for this TWA advertisement. Klein used art to influence the world of advertising. After serving in the Army during World War II, Klein moved to New York City and began working as a commercial illustrator. Klein was seen as the favorite of the Broadway world: during the late 1940s and early 1950s, many of the most popular Broadway productions featured his work on their window cards and posters. By the mid-1950s, Klein established himself as one of America’s leading commercial illustrators. The next decade, however, would prove to be his most illustrious: between 1955 and 1965, Klein designed numerous award-winning travel advertisements, most of it for Howard Hughes and Trans World Airlines. One of these advertisements, depicting New York City’s Times Square, is now part of the collection at the Museum of Modern Art. Klein continued working commercially almost until the end of his life, but in his seventies returned to his artistic roots. He focused on watercolor depictions of his travels in the United States and Europe, painting both rural landscapes as well as architectural studies. These paintings also earned him many awards. Klein passed away in New York in 2005, but his work lives on in bright abstraction, defining a golden era in commercial art.

Trans World Airlines was a major American airline from 1930 until 2001. In 1930, the two companies—Transcontinental Air Transport and Western Air Express—merged to become Transcontinental & Western Air, operating a route from New York City to Los Angeles with stops in St. Louis, Kansas City, and more. With American, United, and Eastern, Transcontinental & Western Air was one of the “Big Four” domestic airlines of the United States in 1930. The airline prospered during World War II, flying 40 million miles for the Army. Howard Hughes acquired control of the company in 1939 and led its postwar expansion to include routes to Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. In 1950, the airline officially changed its name to Trans World Airlines. At its peak, TWA was well-regarded by the Hollywood set and came to be known as “Airline to the Stars”. It was during this time that these striking posters were created, to entice the hardworking American people into travel. Unfortunately, with the Airline Deregulation Act of 1978, TWA began its slow decline—struggling with debt, restructuring, and terrible accidents—until its final bankruptcy filing in 2001.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0265/3475/files/VlJ25AFqc0U9Pq3_ROUwd9YFIGLWAlqMtvhwZktyj7s.png?v=1683228347
