Artist Statement

Jaime Derringer's work is an exploration of shape and color, using layering as a guide. Everything is unplanned and completely intuitive—each mark is a response to its predecessor. The repetition of shapes and lines is an exercise used for escapism and meditation. Jaime embraces happy accidents and approaches each piece as an experiment. Her inspiration includes Japanese calligraphy (Shodo), style and fashion from the 1980s and 1990s, electronic music, celebrations/parties, fireworks, space exploration and sci-fi, undersea creatures, topography, cartography, plated food, and architecture. The piece was a pivotal one that began to explore lines and layering of black and white stripes, a motif that is a constant in her work today.
