Artist Statement

I am drawn to the not-quite bird's eye view of crowds, especially those on beaches. I have, in a way, always felt like an observer and less of a participant throughout my life -- there's a bit of that feeling manifested in the perspective of the scene. I was also blown away by the beauty of the Maine coast; this is just a tiny snippet of that beauty.

Why We Love It

With pine trees as far as the eye can see, rolling hills, jagged cliffs and more coastline than California, it makes sense that Maine has earned the epithet “Vacationland”. For NYCers like us, the drive is long, but if you can suck it up, Maine makes for a quintessential summer city escape—gorgeous hiking trails, seaside retreats, picturesque beaches, and more seafood than you could stuff in your face (though we encourage you to try). Gao has made a career of traveling to and photographing striking destinations. Alice is a self-taught travel and still life photographer. She was born in China, grew up in NJ, and has lived in NYC for the past 7 years. No matter the subject, she strives to create photos that are soulful, considered, and quietly elegant. She enjoys observing the light in familiar spaces and letting it dictate the mood in her photos.
