As they are being photographed, they are in a process of alteration from solid to liquid, from organized form in space to aqueous blob on a surface, and thus suggest a transitiveness that photography, as a medium devoted to stilling the moment, would seem to contradict. Similarly, as was true of the pictures of leaf veins and tree branches, light seems not so much to shine on the snowflakes as it shines through them. Instead of appearing as specimens, in the manner of 19th-century scientific observation, the snowflakes are objects of transformation. Few of the Starns' snowflakes are models of perfection, and in this they remind one of finding starfish and seashells scoured by the tides and left to dry on sandy beaches. Many have parts missing, or they have all their detailed armatures on one side but not the other. Here again, the Starns' images exceed the aesthetic register of the catalog. Unlike industrial structures, or manmade devices, imperfection is an essential part of their beauty and poignancy. Here is material evidence of the Starns' interest in the phenomenological character of the natural world, cast into being against the certitude of our own impermanence. The photographs speak of the fragile delicacy of our ever-warming world while being themselves a visual bulwark against despair, and they draw us, like moths to light, to the pleasures of sight that but for the camera would exceed the human eye." Excerpt from Andy Grundberg's introduction in alleverythingthatisyou (catalogue published by the Wetterling Gallery, Stockholm, Sweden 2007)

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0265/3475/files/N-UpSOo5pV7yVenzhUQaCxC5bo-mSGtgO7Pxnw2a3YI.jpg?v=1683229492
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0265/3475/files/KTRFRd6v8k5jENqv_YTRRZc6xt8AJn9t2TVfKqyrFxQ.jpg?v=1683230828
sharon-montrose-baby-deer-no-2
Baby Deer No. 2

I've always loved animals; they heavily inspire most of my work. Whether capturing a glance, an irreverent bootie shot, or someone daydreaming, the figures tend to not face the viewer, but rather to each be in a contemplative state. Formal elements such as color, light, and tightly cropped spaces help create specific moods. Fashion photography has always been an influence and I love to include sunglasses, jewelry, and bathing suits (I often paint summery beach scenes) as a way of adding reflections, texture, or pattern. This was indeed an impressive feat, as tree peonies take much longer to grow than garden peonies. They’re well worth the wait, with larger, hardier flowers that last longer once cut. The “semi-double” categorization refers to the number of petal rows: a semi-double peony has more than one row of petals coming out of the crown of the flower, but the anthers are still visible when the flower is in bloom. It is highly likely that Ruysch would have had to study the flowers individually, creating sketches to work from, so when she was ready to paint she could combine all sorts of unlikely bedfellows into her lush arrangements. Inspired in part by her father’s work, as well as her many years of practice, Ruysch’s flowers are painted in such close detail they could almost be scientific renderings. This careful attention is part of what gained Ruysch international renown in her time.

As modern-day viewers, we may look at Ruysch’s floral work as simply beautiful bouquets. They’re beautiful indeed, but to gain further insight it is important to delve into how her works were viewed by her peers. In her time, certain flowers would have been easily recognized as references to Christianity. The blue morning glories at the bottom left and right of this arrangement symbolized the Resurrection. Morning glories open at dawn — Jesus coming back from the dead at sunrise.

While those flowers are freshly opened, it’s also important to note that other items in the bouquet are less than fresh, and that’s on purpose. Leaves starting to spot, a background tulip slowly turning brown: these all represent death. Death is a part of life, Ruysch seems to say with this inclusion. Beauty isn’t everlasting. And yet, her contemporary viewers would have found hope in the striking blues of the morning glory, in resurrection and new life.
