In this commentary, Frank suggested that the strength of Stieglitz’s photographs was in the power of the individuals he photographed, rather than in his own technical ability. Outraged, Stieglitz began photographing clouds, something everyone could see but no one could manipulate—his way of proving his artistic prowess. The series Equivalents is recognized as some of the first completely abstract fine-art photography. These deeper layers of meaning allow us to see the value beyond the work’s ornamental beauty.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0265/3475/files/QpcTL0_FY5DVfya-gbvBhI1VZUSzshb8XIwe2GJmAuw_504910e4-8e16-42f6-8fbf-ea927acdfb1d.png?v=1745267360
dig
Dig
Originally designed as a postcard in 1909, Mitchell created Dig as part of her Girls Will Be Girls series, promoting women’s literacy and education. Her father, a professor of anatomy and botany, had an extensive collection of animal skeletons, minerals, and botanical specimens–and from a young age, Ruysch drew from it literally and figuratively.
