Every now and then I can't help myself. I lower my guard and let New York City overwhelm my skeptical photographer's eye, my cautious intellectual side, and I end up with an unabashedly romantic take on the town that has been my home for 26 years. Alec Soth recently said that photography is invariably linked with nostalgia, and surely shooting these gorgeous New York City streets can too easily tip into a maudlin reverie on the city's past. But when the summer sun is low and the streets are wet and the clouds are snagged by tall, tall buildings, I trust my heart and I wrap myself around these streets like I'm in love, even when I know this town is going to break my heart right around the next corner.

Joseph O. I couldn't stand it. Why does the image stay with me after all these years? To evoke the feeling of chasing childhood memories during adulthood, I took photographs where I grew up on the East Coast and where I live now on the West Coast. When I reflect on the past, I do not hold onto specific facts or conversations. What I recall are the images, the way an object looked, its color, shape, and texture. Tangible objects trigger my memory; I can be standing in a corner store in California in the springtime and immediately be transported to my grandparents' home on North Charles Street, white with black shutters. As I move into a new phase of my life, I recognize a strong need to remember the past and record it, to somehow revisit and recreate my own reality. Harper Pennington crafted this simple yet beautiful seascape. Though watercolor purists might have frowned upon the combination, the use of gouache allowed him to create more vivid highlights in the waves and the clothing of the woman and children on the beach. These spots of brightness bring life to the monochrome maritime scene.

James Whistler, Pennington’s painting mentor and role model, used a variety of media to create several beach scenes throughout his career. Japanese style ukiyo-e woodblock printing took shape in the 17th century. From its early days through its peak popularity as an art form, it focused on city life, courtesans, and actors. Economic policy changes in the 1840s sought to suppress displays of luxury. As the culture changed, ukiyo-e adjusted its subject matter: focusing on scenes of nature like landscapes, birds, and flowers. This final era of ukiyo-e is perhaps its best known in the Western world, though of course there's a long history ukiyo-e masters that predate this thematic shift.

It’s easy to make the connection from Kojima zu to our other ukiyo-e woodblock editions. The scene is serene, but the water swells with life force. It's an island image with a distinctively ukiyo-e energy.

We couldn't say which island is depicted in this print. The sound “ko” in Japanese means “small”, and the sound “jima” (also spelled “shima”) means island. Thus, many islands dotting the waters off the coast of Japan are called Kojima, written as 小島, or “small island”. Most of these islands are uninhabited, but a few have gained notoriety: one for being the home to many wild monkeys and another for being a wildlife monument.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0265/3475/files/8Oes9jQYUX6NiQE7KHTm9n57xj4HR-q53C9ryBNPHdI.png?v=1683229093
northeast-la
Northeast LA
I make paintings using an arrangement of shapes to construct images of moments I experience during daily activities. Travel was difficult—though railroads and highways would eventually service the area, Watkins’ visit preceded them by several years—forcing the photographer to go by steamships, barges, and portage railroads. It wasn’t just Watkins traveling. He had his mammoth-plate camera, his stereoscope camera, hundreds of glass negative plates, and the equipment and flammable chemicals needed to develop the negatives in tow.
