Artist Statement

On creating the art for The Interestings by Meg Wolitzer

This painting, which is gouache on paper, is featured on the cover of Meg Wolitzer’s novel The Interestings, which follows six artists throughout their lives, beginning with a strong bond they form together in adolescence. I wanted the cover to look big and important and vivid. But it also needed some warmth and humanity. My design began with a set of curved stripes, which the publisher said was too much of a rainbow (quite rightly). Once the stripes were straightened I could focus more on putting unique colors next to one another and then letting the stripes bleed into each other in spots. I hoped to show, in an abstract way, these characters staying connected to one another throughout their lives—and that these connections can be both painful and brilliant. – Lynn Buckley
