I choose a room that I can recall in detail, like my parent's dining room in Red Plastic Plates. The original artwork is made from cut paper, which I paint by hand on my studio floor, then cut into the shapes that make up the room. The cut paper pieces are even flatter, more graphic and labor-intensive than my paintings, yet more physical, due to the layers of paper; up close, you can see the glue and little imperfections that don't exist in my paintings. Living on the East Coast made me acutely aware of the aesthetics of my midwestern upbringing. My experiences in New York and at Yale University cast my family's home and lifestyle in a different light: a pragmatic, mundane (and rather flat) sense of beauty, unburdened by high ideas or refinements of style. The combination of my earlier working-class tastes and the later-acquired, intensely cosmopolitan awareness of style has shaped who I am as a painter. Red Plastic Plates captures the humor of the culture clash I sometimes feel when I introduce new people to my family. My husband and stepson were visiting my parents' home in Cincinnati for the first time, and my mother, to my horror, insisted on serving dinner in the dining room on red plastic plates with plastic cups, plastic silverware and paper napkins. President Woodrow Wilson created a US Food Administration with the rallying cry of “Food Will Win the War!”. Its head, Herbert Hoover, insisted that he accept no salary in his role, knowing that he would need the moral authority to get the American people to make the necessary sacrifices. He designed an effort to appeal to the American sense of volunteerism by using the Food Administration’s own Advertising Section, creating a wealth of posters. The posters encouraged voluntary, scientific substitution over rationing, and it was a success: domestic food production increased even as farmers joined the war force, and shipments to the forces abroad grew threefold. This particular poster—Food–don’t waste it—was designed by Fred G. Cooper in 1917. That interest was supported in her marriage to Reverend Thomas John Hussey, a well-connected astronomer who came from a scientifically-minded family. It was unusual for Victorian women to engage in scientific study. Those who did were typically upper class and tended to paint flora, which was thought to be elegant and becoming. Hussey pushed back against those gendered notions, focusing on fungi and lichen despite what was considered socially appropriate. Whereas her fellow female illustrators were sent specimens to paint, Hussey ventured out on her own to find her subjects, traveling to terrain she described as “out-of-the-way wild places, far from carriage tracks, and often where large herds of cattle are pastured.” In a letter to her friend and leading mycologist of her time, Reverend M.J. Berkeley, Hussey astutely summed up her struggle with gender and propriety: “I am always under the uncomfortable impression that the thing that I am doing is not the right thing to be doing.” Berkeley later named a fungal genus Husseia after “my friend, Mrs. Hussey, whose talents well deserve such a distinction”.

Hussey blazed her own trail in publishing Illustrations of British Mycology, containing 90 detailed, hand-colored lithographic plates made by herself or her sister, with descriptions, personal observations, and anecdotes.
