It's relatively peaceful and serene, most unlike some of the more densely populated beach and pool images from the past we've seen lately. This piece was made earlier this spring in anticipation for the long, hot days and dewy nights of summer. The image is created from several brush-pen studies. I'm still not sure whether a paper bag over your drink allows for a full pass on drinking in public, but generally it gets the job done so that you can enjoy whatever beverage you prefer, anywhere in this city. The idea is to represent a snapshot of our summer in New York City. This piece is a characteristic example of the sort of everyday subject matter I choose to render: objects we encounter daily that, given a moment to appreciate, can be infused with playful beauty and import. They are the items that make up our lives and should be appreciated as such. My take, both figurative and graphic, suggests a particular reflection of what's there, my impression on paper. Growing up in Toronto, as a skater I was very interested in surfing, but given my geographical location there wasn’t much of an opportunity to get involved. My interest in independent shapers and the seemingly endless varieties of boards are what inspired this piece. The simple silhouettes of the boards serve as the perfect vehicle for studies of shape and color, which is commonly the focus of my work.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0265/3475/files/l-iNTtQcvbP1LidtrS5uP52p1-f-pLYUWem5HoL1luw.png?v=1683230343
coney-island-brooklyn
Coney Island, Brooklyn
I keep going back to urban landscapes, drawing them from life as often as possible, zooming on the visual grammar touches that define a location.
