Artist Statement

In 2007, I developed a new body of paintings and drawings titled High Lonesome. The title was inspired by an odd sign for a Christian ministry that I saw on a street corner while on a visit to Seoul, Korea. It read: The Mountain of Fire and Miracles. I interpreted this sign as a promise of some higher world, an exit from a world below that is at odds with its own changing identity. My current work glimpses this new world. The viewer is led across the chasm that falls between reality and fantasy, crossed only by imagination and sentimental longing. All the iconic characters we pretended to be as children are present: the explorer, the animal and the cowboy; all heroes to our formative selves. These works explore the idea of being caught between who we imagined we should become and what we in fact have become. Through this lens I seek to remake our childish dreams into a more forgiving view of our present circumstances. My work is a romantic version of a distinctly American question: how to cross the desert between our heroes and ourselves.
