These paintings are gouache and ink on paper. The subject matter I deal with is mostly walled gardens with enclosing hedges, boxwood hedges and bushes clipped into shapes, while the wilderness looms beyond. These natural and unnatural shapes, which people struggle to make and maintain, signify their attempt to control nature: They build fences and walls of trees to keep the world out. The titles are from overheard conversations and the labeling of objects.
