Artist Statement

I was in the town of Napa for a commercial shoot, and was having one of those magical afternoons where the world was seemingly handing me little photographic gifts as I wandered around an old section of downtown Napa on foot—I was in a flow state. It was time to get home but I needed to use the restroom, so I stopped at this vintage burger and pie spot. I wanted to buy something so they wouldn’t mind me asking to use their restroom before a long drive home in rush hour traffic, so I ordered a piece of pie. Because the space looked like a set from the 50s in an Eggleston photograph, I ordered what I thought would photograph the best, which was this very tall lemon merengue pie. I shot it a couple places in the otherwise empty room, used the restroom, took a bite of the pie and left to the likely total confusion of the two ladies working there.

Why We Love It

"What felt so important that Nathan wanted to document this moment? ... That’s where it is so fun to be a photographer. The more you shoot, the more you notice, and there is such joy in noticing. Not just passing by or glancing at, but really seeing something: the way the light hits a particular piece of glassware, the graphic shapes created by paint colors and parked cars, the humor in the contrasts between people and their surroundings. As a photographer, you learn to see the world around you in an entirely different light, and you also get to celebrate it. By taking a photograph, you monumentalize the “everyday extraordinary” as Nathan says in her bio. Even the simplest things—like a slice of lemon meringue pie in Evening Sun—demand and deserve your attention "... Read more from Carly Piersol on the blog!
