Artist Statement

No matter how New Yorkers felt about Christo and Jeanne-Claude's Central Park installation The Gates, no one could deny that the 7,500 billowing saffron panels were completely transformed by a mid-February snowfall. I had made several visits to the installation, but I arrived just after sunrise on the morning after the snow to photograph without the crowds. Ten years later, I rediscovered this image, which I had never prepared or printed before. It captures my favorite aspect of The Gates: the swoop of distant colored lines crossing the park and midtown cityscape.
