Prunus persica: J.H. Hale is one of around 7,500 botanical illustrations in the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s collection of pomological watercolors. Pomology is the science of growing fruit, and the collection was created in 1886 primarily as a research reference for fruit breeders and growers. The collection is expansive, representing 38 plant families in total.

This particular piece shows the J.H. Hale variety of peach, as illustrated by Amanda Almira Newton. Newton contributed over two hundred paintings to the collection as a whole, but this vividly colored strain of peach caught our eye. The J.H. Hale strain is known among peach growers for having a superb flavor, and just by gazing at Newton’s succulent work, we can almost taste it.
