My houses and buildings have broken away from earlier paintings of towering stacks of buildings. With those communities collapsing, I was moved to paint some new ground-an escape for their residents, who now often find themselves entrenched in nature instead of towering above it. Tumbling out of the previous paintings of destruction, these little buildings are a bit like refugees lost in a new world where they are not quite certain how they fit in yet.

The plant life in my paintings are picked up from walks I take in nature- this stump in Vivacious I found in a small graveyard in Vermont. I like imagining little worlds living in an alternate universe as I walk along the mossy stumps and mushroom troops. I also think about the effects of climate change that we are now experiencing. Our familiar natural world is shifting to new patterns and who knows what the future will bring. Reflecting my own hopes and fears, my paintings may depict residents striking off on their own to snuggle down into new surroundings, finding a magical home and forming communities among the flora and fungus. Other times they may seem small, alone, and overwhelmed by the landscape.

In Vivacious I hoped to create a more optimistic feeling with both a landscape and the relationship between the two houses to explore. Although we are perched somewhat precariously on precipices in this painting, I find both tranquility and longing in this garden.

Casey has a knack for embodying different perspectives on city life with her dreamy visuals, whether we're talking intricate webs, or dizzyingly tall towers of buildings. In Vivacious though, two small, single homes sit delicately perched atop a wild and lushly overgrown tree trunk. Casey’s homes seem to have tumbled out of her earlier painted urban settings, and landed amongst the moss. Their brightly painted exteriors not quite fitting into their new surroundings just yet—a nod to the recent mass exodus of city dwellers to the country.

What makes Casey’s work even more impressive (and hypnotizing) is knowing that each individually inked and drawn building and plant form is sourced from her own life. The gorgeous greenery in Vivacious comes from a small stump found on a graveyard walk in Vermont. Drawing inspiration from her surroundings, Casey imagines alternate worlds in miniature that reflect our own experiences. With climate change comes new patterns of vegetation and shifts in communities. Vivacious considers Casey’s own hopes and fears of “snuggling down” into new surroundings, which can feel magical and overwhelming at the same time.

Casey’s meticulous attention to detail allows her to create complex, chaotic worlds, crafted by precise strokes of ink and paint. From city stacks to abodes adrift, her homescapes are curious and strangely relatable, and her newest print is no exception. It beckons you in for an exploration of newness and a search for your place in Casey’s Vivacious world.

Amy Casey

Amy Casey has exhibited her paintings nationally with solo shows in Cleveland, Chicago, San Francisco, Provincetown, New York City, Los Angeles and Homer, Alaska. She also makes etchings, primarily at Zygote Press in Cleveland. She has been awarded three Ohio Arts Council Individual Excellence Awards, the Cleveland Arts Prize and a grant through CPAC's Creative Workforce Fellowship program. Represented by Zg Gallery in Chicago, and Michael Foley in New York, Casey resides in a crooked little blue house in Cleveland where she is a full time artist and a part time cat hugger.
