Artist Statement
Kate started making ceramic bowls during the first few months after her son Hank was born. Every Monday, Kate & Hank would head over to her mom’s house (hi, Grandma Sherry) and work on projects for the day. One of these projects happened to be making a pile of hand-built plates, bowls, and pins utilizing her mom’s small kiln that lives in her garage. Kate mostly illustrates, but the process of learning about ceramics was a fun distraction for her as she also learned how to be a mom by hanging out with her mom.

These pieces are made out of stoneware and are bumpy and clunky, just like her drawings.
Why We Love It

Made of white stoneware clay with a clear gaze, each Tiny Bowl is a handcrafted, original artwork—no two are identical, differing slightly in appearance from piece to piece. Bingaman-Burt’s chosen material gives the bowls a “bumpy and clunky” (her own words) appearance that echoes the poppy, playful wobbliness of her drawings. You could keep a couple on hand for artful, unique gifts under $50 or collect one of each design to sit side-by-side on a counter or credenza. But since every single bowl is its own special snowflake, we’re extra into the idea of multiples. A mix of 5 scattered around your shelfie-est bookshelf? Brilliant. + Bowls are made from white stoneware clay with a clear glaze.
+ As each bowl is an original, handmade artwork, they vary slightly in appearance—something we particularly love about these pieces!
+ Bowls are between 3 and 4 inches in diameter and between 0.75 and 1 inches high.
+ Each bowl comes with a signed risograph print, printed in an edition of 40 on a RZ390 named Janet.
+ Risographs are 5”x5”, printed on 65lb cover stock using fluorescent pink aqua and black ink.
+ All orders for this edition are final sale and not eligible for discount or return.

Kate Bingaman-Burt

Kate Bingaman-Burt mostly draws, letters, documents, and collects, but she also does a lot of other things that involve energy, conversation, and exchange. She is a Professor of Graphic Design at Portland State University and makes illustrations for all sorts of clients all around the world. Past clients include Pinterest, Airbnb, Hillary for America, Google, IDEO, Etsy, The New York Times, Creative Mornings, Museum of Modern Art, and Girl Scouts of America. Kate’s studio is located in Outlet, her project space in Portland, Oregon. She owns Outlet, which hosts workshops, pop-up events and a community risograph print studio and zine library. She also sits on the board of Design Portland and has been scheming with them since 2012.
