Opened in the spring of 1903, Luna Park was the fantastical brainchild of architect Frederic Thompson and businessman Elmer Dundy. With 22 acres of land on Coney Island, the park was a sprawling microcosm complete with amusement park rides, shopping areas, circus animals, restaurants, live entertainment, and more, all nestled into an architectural dreamland of towers, lakes, and winding promenades. Luna Park at Night was shot in 1905 after sunset when all 250,000 lights would illuminate over 1,000 red and white spires, domes, and minarets. At the center of it all stood the 200-foot-tall Electric Tower, lit by 20,000 incandescent lamps. During a time when electricity was still used quite sparingly, Luna Park would transform into a true celestial sensation after dark.

Shot after sunset and illuminated by hundreds of thousands of individual bulbs, this 1905 photograph captures an enchanting evening view of the original Luna Park—22 acres of amusement rides, shops, circus attractions, restaurants, and more, built into a dreamland of grand towers, lakes, promenades, and stunning structures with over 1000 light-studded spires, domes and minarets. It’s resplendency was well-deserved: At the time, electricity wasn’t widely used. The sparkling sight of the park at night would have been quite a sensation, every bulb turning on at the same time in one awe-inspiring moment—all thanks to that electric tower. The reflection of those myriad twinkling lights on the inky surface of the water makes this image all the more magical, dizzying, and pleasantly disorienting ... Read more on the blog!
