Artist Statement

My work combines painting, photography, and a bit of collage. I create the foundation for each piece with layers of inkjet photographic prints, which I adhere to the front and sides of a wooden panel. I then paint over the entire printed image as well as any exposed surfaces - distilling down to what feels essential to me, while pushing and pulling to create depth in the flatness, air in the shadows and a shimmer in the reflections.

This particular piece began with a photo I took while driving around Ocean Beach in San Diego. The dazzle of the silver draped car in front of wild looking Hollywood Juniper trees immediately caught my eye. Once I started painting over every detail of the photo (including removing a car from the driveway), it was the juxtaposition between the revealed and concealed in this quintessentially California scene that became most intriguing to explore.

Why We Love It

So much feels distinctly and classically Giberson in Silver Cover: the suburban setting, the automotive vehicle at the center, the mind-bending photorealism. But there’s also something new that’s been unleashed: wildness.

Silver Cover is our first edition with Giberson to so prominently feature such an untamed living thing: the Hollywood Juniper Trees that tower over the car and house. The trees, Charles Burchfield-esque in their depiction, have a wild appearance of movement, which contrasts mightily with the extreme stillness of the car. The trees—symbols of the stationary and rooted—seem to thrash and move, while the car—a quintessentially-American symbol of freedom and movement—is not only still but contained by the silver drape.

Leah Giberson

Leah Giberson was raised by artists deep in the woods of New Hampshire. From her earliest memories she was fascinated by the orderly scenes and presumed normality of suburbia, all of which seemed worlds away from her own bohemian upbringing. This tension between fact and fiction in our perceptions continues to be a source of inspiration in her art. Leah received her BFA in painting from Massachusetts College of Art in 1997 and has lived on the top floor of a triple decker in Brookline, MA ever since.
