Artist Statement

My childhood love of nature, mushroom hunting, forest roaming, fairies, and fairy tales is alive and well in my art. While I know that there is a scientific explanation for the occurrence of fairy rings in fields and forests, I still think it’s fun to imagine that mushrooms grow in circles because fairies or elves danced in circles in the middle of the night. Collage is an ideal medium for illustrating this lore, since mushroom caps and dancing legs can be cut and pasted together to form a ring of hybrid creatures.

Amy Ross

Boston-based artist Amy Ross was a religious studies major at Connecticut College and earned a Master's in Theological Studies from Harvard Divinity School before studying art at the SMFA at Tufts University. Her work is fueled by a lifelong interest in folklore and mythology and a deep reverence for the natural world.
