Inspiration always comes to me from the natural world. I made this piece after seeing a lunar eclipse. I remember my son and I driving around after sunset, searching for the perfect spot, scanning the skies for a glimpse of the moon as it slowly disappeared. This was a little over a year into the pandemic and it was the most excitement we’d had in a long time. And then watching the moon transform in the sky took us out of that stressful moment in time and connected us to the larger universe.

I decided to create something to capture that night. A textile piece about the moon’s beauty but also its power, as something familiar yet deeply mysterious. It began with me cutting and arranging various naturally dyed fabrics— indigo, avocado, oak and madder dyed— into a kind of moon flag. The dark and light shapes came together, the black raw silk like the velvety darkness, naturally dyed warm tones on linen and cotton radiating out the warm glow of an eclipse. This piece reflects on the moon as a place of strength and comfort amidst the chaos.

Parker uses Indigo dye to create the blue semicircles and crescents, showing the moon as it moves through the phases of eclipse. Indigo is similar in it’s alchemical process to cyanotype which uses the light of the sun to print handmade patterns into fabric, a process pioneered by 19th century botanist Anna Atkins. Parker’s two debut 20x200 editions—Catskill Prairie and Bi-coastal—also employ this method resulting in bright bursts of plant patterns. Between the sun, silks, botanicals, blooms and now the moon, we can say that Parker’s art practice is truly universal.
