I paint from memory, choosing memories of places or spaces that I recall in detail. Rental Property is about my parents' neighborhood in Cincinnati. The house next door to us had become a rental property and was gradually falling into disrepair. In the painting, the rental property is painted freehand, while the neighboring houses are drawn with a ruler. The houses with owners are well maintained and have manicured lawns and trees. The rental property is crumbling and its yard is overgrown-the imagery itself is degenerating from representation to something abstract and chaotic. So, at the same time the rental property symbolizes a neighborhood in decline, it also is more free flowing and expressive-a beautiful eyesore.
