Artist Statement

I have always been fascinated by airports, airplanes, and the systems and patterns that make air travel a reality. When in high school for a couple of years in NJ, I would go and spend hours watching the air traffic over NYC and Newark (from the very same vantage point that this image was made) and imagine ways that it could somehow be recorded. Fast forward a "couple" of decades and I found myself photographing fireflies during the summers. After a short time, I realized that I could use a similar technique and apply it to airplanes. I eventually made my way back to this fantastic spot and made my first long exposure of Newark Airport. While that image was a technical disaster, it was enough for me to immediately see the potential and I was hooked. As it was well into spring when I made it, I had to wait until the next winter and it's (now welcome) early darkness to really continue the project. It wasn't for almost a year that I returned to this favorite spot of my youth and made more images, including this one. The process of making these is complicated, difficult and predictably unpredictable, and has kicked my behind in ways no project ever has. At the same time, no project I have undertaken has been this much fun. And, sometimes, kind of scary.

Why We Love It

"Both bodies of work have a more subtle thing in common as well, something that I’ve been thinking about a lot as of late and have settled on as a sort of contemporary sublime, one that takes into account the mystery and magic of the manmade. Fireflies and their freaky lightshows fall more neatly into the domain of the unknowable, but here we see the unfathomable scores of journeys that are undertaken daily above us, revealing the madness of the city and the equally frenzied skies—two realms typically unaware of each other" ...
