La Granada is a work from The Central Sun, a meditation, communication, and visual accompaniment to the sacred and spiritual journeys we are all on in our waking dreams. This series of contemporary painterly works evoke Orishas, spirit animals, temples, pyramids, religious iconography, earth and sky, and the central figure of the sun. Each piece begins with one round mark — the central sun — and expands from there, creating its own non-linear narrative as it takes shape. The lines of the pieces in this series could be the markings of both ancient or future people. The Central Sun communicates a sense of the mystic while opening a window to the confusion and order of life here within reach and in other realms.

The original painting is part of The Central Sun, Miles’ larger series in which each piece begins with a round mark representing the center of the solar system. From that starting Sun flows the rest of the image, a story orbiting its star, unraveling nonlinearly, visual events that evolve indirectly, in reverse or in parallel, overlap, collide, or segue. There’s a dreamlike quality to this sort of circuitous route. Like the odd imprecise figure one remembers from a dream, your mind might find recognizable forms in the lines: a cross, perhaps a fish, maybe a flower and stem. These are purposefully suggestive, and intentionally incomplete, defined lines coalescing in an amorphous shape. La Granada is about the journey, not the destination—which makes a lot of sense coming from an artist who’s a wanderer at heart. Miles has spent a great deal of time exploring arts and customs abroad. Kenya Miles is the artist & alchemist behind Traveling Miles Studio. Her work primarily focuses on textile and fiber art with an emphasis on earth pigments and natural dyes. Whether quilting, dying rope, hand-painting fabric, or painting canvases, Kenya’s work and process is a ledger of years of wandering and apprenticing around the globe. From the valleys of Oaxaca, Mexico to the red clay roads of Ntonso, Ghana, her work honors ancient practices while harmoniously drawing on a distinctive contemporary voice.
