Artist Statement

My work investigates the process of reclamation and its expression in physical and psychological transformations. I’m drawn to narratives addressing the environment and memory. The tension between animals, plants and humans is explored through subject and material.

In subject, I’m drawn to the places in my immediate environment where mankind and nature intersect unsuccessfully. Literal landscapes that reflect deeper psychological struggles. Areas where we’ve attempted to tame and control nature, with limited success.

In terms of materials, I use plants, homemade natural dyes, biodegradable and recycled fabrics, locally sourced and naturally dyed wool and thread to make my work. Growing native plants and selectively gathering and pressing them to use as forms to print with has become part of my painting process. I also grow and collect plants in order to transform them into natural dyes to paint with.
