Artist Statement

It's already hot and sticky outside as I aimlessly wander through the early morning streets of Sayulita. My eyes glide back and forth from street to sidewalk: a pile of dirt against a turquoise wall, a bright purple blanket on a concrete bed. The poppy colors beckon me. I round a bend in the road and see the glistening handmade popsicles stacked in elegant rows, frozen, waiting to be devoured.

Katie Baum

Katie was born in New York City, grew up in Baltimore, MD, and received a BA in art and photography from Guilford College. She began her career photographing the back roads of North Carolina, shooting in black and white. Her focus soon changed as she was motivated by the capacity of color and its ability to define an image.
