Sergei
Prokudin-Gorskii
is
remembered
for
spearheading
innovative
work
in
color
photography
at
the
turn
of
the
20th
century.
After
traveling
to
Berlin
to
study
photochemistry
in
1901,
Prokudin-Gorskii
returned
to
Russia
to
a
railroad-car
turned
darkroom
sponsored
by
Czar
Nicholas
II.
He
made
his
way
through
the
Empire
documenting
the
life
and
landscapes
he
came
across,
eventually
earning
wide
recognition
throughout
Russia,
Germany,
and
France.
In
1906,
he
became
the
president
of
the
photography
department
of
Russia’s
foremost
photography
journal,
Fotograf-Liubitel.
Prokudin-Gorskii
is
best
known
for
his
color
portrait
of
Leo
Tolstoy,
taken
in
1908.
