Artist Statement

The feet in this image belong to two cousins, each of whom lives on opposite sides of the country. But for the last few summers they have been able to meet on a small Maine island for one magical month. That means four weeks of being attached at the hip. At all times.

This is the Place is a recent collaboration with Susan Conley, published by Down East Books, which documents a year in "Motherland" by the two Portland neighbors. Valerie Vevais, together with Jock Sturges, just published a Werkdruck of her work. She was a 2015 PDN Photo Annual Winner and her work has recently been featured in Slate, PDN, American Photography, and ProPhoto Daily.
