Artist Statement

I started painting medication portraits in 2018 after making one just for myself of my beloved asthma inhaler, which is something that is very literally always with me and has been since I was two years old. Soon afterwards, I realized that there's a lot of power in celebrating the medications that allow us to live our healthiest lives. In joyfully painting medications that aid people with management of everything from depression and anxiety to thyroid issues, MS, cancer and acne, I hope to turn any stigma around various conditions and their treatments into attitudes of sincere gratitude for the existence of the substances that are bacon-saving for those who need them. With this Birth Control Portrait I, I wanted to extend the concept to include the classic birth control pill wheel, for which we can thank Margaret Sanger and her lifetime of activism, research and underwriting. Releasing this print as part of Women's History Month is an extra treat!

Why We Love It

This isn’t just Joan LeMay’s raucously joyful debut edition. This is an exercise in enthusiasm and acceptance, an ecstatic homage to a daily dose. This is a story about something small but immeasurably mighty. Arguably the most important scientific advance of the 20th century. So good Loretta Lynn even wrote a song about it. Joan LeMay

Joan LeMay (American, b. 1979 in Houston, Texas) is a portraitist and illustrator who is interested in pattern, gesture and Byzantine halos. She loves painting people, animals, plants and things (a kind of anthropomorphic approach to portraiture) in equal measure, and packs referential objects, color-based symbolism and other subject-specific elements into the busy backgrounds of her work in order to reflect the soul and life of the subject depicted. She is currently focusing on work that celebrates what soothes us (and what soothed her in her childhood)--over-the-top portraits of beloved TV and pop culture personalities and public role models, food,... fellow artists, and portraiture of medications. The medication work is also designed to help those who rely on medications to celebrate the existence of treatments instead of feeling stigmatized for having to take anything in the first place. She also takes pet portraiture and memorial portraiture very seriously.
