Artist Statement

I don’t seek to repeat the past with my work and so I’ve closed any stringent narrative in my former paintings. Although I have cast off any deliberate narrative or imagery, one underlying theme present in my work is the belief in the continual renewal of nature of the human spirit. The abstract elements of these paintings break down nature to its purest form and then rebuild again. By means of adding, taking away, and adding again a finished point is revealed. As each painting is reduced, some remain in their minimal state, whereas others are then built up again and painted heavily back into the canvas.

Why We Love It

Crump conjures a sense of continual renewal through his own special incantation—an enchantingly balanced witches brew of subtraction and addition. To create his oeuvre of abstract paintings, Crump layers, removes, and repeats until he starts to see a destination take shape. Some pieces rest on a more minimal note, blackness or blur quieting the visual plane, while others, like today’s edition, find a voluble, extroverted end. Dense areas of paint, marbling, and tool marks all compete for our attention in Sorcerer, drawing the eye in dizzyingly disparate directions. William Crump

William Crump received his BFA from Ringling School of Art and Design in 1994. He currently lives and works in New York. In 2014 he joined TSA Gallery in Brooklyn, which serves as curatorial platform for artists. He is currently represented by Station Independent Projects in New York. In 2014 William was selected for The Artist Pension Trust. His work has been exhibited throughout the US and Europe. Forthcoming curatorial projects will be held at TSA Gallery in Brooklyn and Station Independent Projects in New York.
