In Rain, our second edition with internationally acclaimed photographer Flora Hanitijo, five vibrantly striped lawn chairs circle a red polka-dotted table in the middle of a rainstorm in a way that each chair feels alive; anthropomorphized. The scene is unexpectedly radiant–like so much of Hanitjito’s work, the contrast of sunlight pouring in even as heavy drops fall creates a divine, time-stopping contrast, illuminating the wet surfaces and creating an arresting visual alchemy. Rain sparkles mid-air like glitter, transforming the mundane backyard setting into something magical. A clothesline in the background strung with colorful children’s clothes sways slightly, blurred by the falling rain. Everything glistens. The patio gleams with puddles. The grass glows in saturated green. Though no people are visible, the scene hums with presence: the echo of voices, the clatter of play, the hush that follows a storm’s surprise arrival. It’s a quiet, cinematic still from a larger story.

In concert with Smoke, our first edition with the artist, the mood in Rain is nostalgic, melancholic, spiritually charged, and full of tenderness and resilience. There’s joy here, but it’s the kind that grows in the cracks—honest joy tinged with complexity. You can feel Hanitijo’s gaze: maternal, protective, curious, wise, and open. The piece reads like a fragment of summer from a childhood you half-remember—sunshowers and soggy shoes, afternoons that stretch on forever, and the bittersweet knowledge that everything, even happiness, is temporary. There’s a poignancy in the empty chairs, as if they were just vacated or are waiting for someone to return. The invitation is emotional as much as visual: come sit and be here, even if the sky breaks open.

Hanitijo describes the body of work of which Rain is a part as “a love letter to my daughter,” a way of making sense of a life reshaped by personal upheaval. Originally from Macau and raised in Montreal, the artist now lives in Brooklyn with her child, channeling her experiences as a mother and artist into her poetic voice. This work doesn't deny pain doesn’t deny pain, but instead insists on looking closer, on finding softness in struggle. “Even when your world turns devastating, there is always beauty,” she explains—and this photograph proves her right. It is both an offering and a reminder that serenity and hardship are not opposites, but companions.
