Artist Statement

My work investigates the process of reclamation and its expression in physical and psychological transformations. I’m drawn to narratives addressing the environment and memory. The tension between the natural world and human intervention is explored through subject and material. I use plants, homemade dyes, biodegradable and recycled fabrics, locally sourced and naturally dyed wool and thread. I create a variety of textiles—naturally dyed, cyanotype, and plant stamped—as elements for my work.

These botanically-printed pieces have been created using specimens grown in my own gardens. For many years I lived in upstate NY before moving to LA. So I use a combination of plants native to the Hudson Valley and southern California. Through experimentation, I’ve come to know the best plants for printing. Once the specimen is collected, carefully and mindfully so as to preserve the living plant, it’s placed in a large home-made press in my studio. Once dried, it can then be coated with paint and printed on fabric to create a composition. California Chaparral and Ferns, Ferns, Ferns celebrate the beauty and importance of native plants in the landscape and nature’s endless healing power.

Why We Love It

Hand-stamped using real plants (!) that Parker grew and pressed herself, these are not your garden variety art additions. The panels quickly became a crowd favorite, inspiring Parker to create two brand new styles to celebrate the start of the season: California Chaparral and Ferns, Ferns, Ferns are Parker’s ode to her beloved SoCal surroundings.
