Created using a cinematograph, Free Skating Field Combination is one of many figure skating instructional diagrams included in the 1921 book Skating with Bror Meyer. Bror Meyer was a decorated champion and dedicated teacher of the sport in the early 1900s. With figure skating making its Olympic debut at the Summer Olympics in London in 1908 and increasing international interest in the decade following, Meyer set out to produce an accessible visual guide to both basic and advanced skills. Using motion picture images nestled in mountainous winter landscapes, numbered steps, and concise explanations, Meyer’s diagrams are as optically delightful as they are didactic.

Part 20s-era technical figure skating instructional, part testament to athletic grace, and part monochrome vision of a mountainous winter wonderland, Free Skating Field Combination is something very special—that’s still well-suited to almost any art collection.
